Fodor's Review

Extremely rustic accommodations on a small island 25 minutes' from Kadavu's airstrip allow you a fantastic glimpse into Fijian life. Bai's paternal ancestor arrived from Boston as a handyman on one of the U.S.'s first voyages to Fiji in the 19th century and his descendants have lived here ever since. Bai will teach you to spearfish, free-dive for lobsters and scuba dive, and will educate you concerning village life and sustenance using his lush garden of sugarcane, avocadoes, and other fruits. Snorkeling (bring your own equipment), hiking, bird-watching and, of course, village visits are close at hand. One bure has a double bed and its own toilet and shower, another has two very small double bedrooms sharing a nearby outdoor shower and outhouse toilets. Over a hill is a 12-bed dorm with cooking facilities and a separate bathroom set on a beautiful white-sand beach. A meal plan including hearty curries, Fijian dishes, and plenty of vegetables is $15 per day.
