Bendigo Art Gallery

Bendigo Art Gallery Review

The beautiful Bendigo Art Gallery houses a notable collection of contemporary Australian paintings, including the work of Jeffrey Smart, Lloyd Rees, and Clifton Pugh. (Pugh once owned a remote Outback pub infamous for its walls daubed with his own pornographic cartoons.) The gallery also has some significant 19th-century French realist and impressionist works, bequeathed by a local surgeon. It also hosts international exhibitions such as the world exclusive "The White Wedding Dress: 200 Years of Wedding Fashions" in 2011, featuring dresses from the the London Victoria and Albert Museum's superb collection. There's a free guided tour every day at 2 pm.
