Burke Museum

Burke Museum Review

The Burke Museum takes its name from Robert O'Hara Burke who, with William Wills, became one of the first white explorers to cross Australia from south to north in 1861. Burke served as superintendent of police in Beechworth from 1856 to 1859. Not surprisingly, the small area and few mementos dedicated to Burke are overshadowed by the Ned Kelly exhibits, including letters, photographs, and memorabilia that give genuine insight into the man and his misdeeds. The museum also displays a reconstructed streetscape of Beechworth in the 1880s.
