By Bus and Tram
Melbourne is divided into two zones. Zone 1 is the urban core, where most travelers spend their time. There are two types of ticket: Metcard (paper tickets) and myki (a stored-money smartcard system being slowly introduced across the public transport network). The basic ticket (the Metcard) is the one-zone ticket, which can be purchased onboard the bus or tram (or purchased at 7-11 stores, Melbourne Town Hall, and the Melbourne Visitors Centre at Federation Square) for A$3.80. It's valid for travel within a specific zone on any bus, tram, or train for two hours after purchase. For travelers, the most useful ticket is probably the Zone 1 day ticket, which costs A$7. Trams run until midnight, and can be hailed wherever you see a green-and-gold tram-stop sign.
