Fodor's Review

A spectacular, postmodern building (in Carlton Gardens) houses displays of the varied cultures around Australia and the Pacific Islands. The Bunjilaka exhibit explores the traditions of the country's Aboriginal groups, while the Australia Gallery focuses on Victoria's heritage (and includes the preserved body of Australia's greatest racehorse, Phar Lap). There's plenty for kids, too, with the wooded Forest Gallery, Children's Gallery (housed in what looks like a giant Rubik's Cube), Mind and Body Gallery, and Science and Life Gallery. The museum regularly hosts touring blockbuster exhibitions (additional fee).
