Fodor's Review

Set in the heart of St. Kilda's café, bar, and club precinct, Tolarno Hotel was once owned by artists who ran a gallery out of the space, and it still has an idiosyncratic artistic bent. The rooms and common spaces are decorated with artworks by local artists and students of the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), and Monash University. The color schemes here are very bold (red, purple, and orange dominate), and the furnishings are comfortable rather than luxurious. This is a friendly, funky place to stay (or to have a bite in Mirka, the in-house restaurant run by Guy Grossi who runs the Grossi Florentino in Bourke Street). Front balcony rooms give you an uninterrupted view of action on Fitzroy Street; back rooms are quieter.
