Art Gallery of Western Australia

Art Gallery of Western Australia Review

Founded in 1895, the Art Gallery of Western Australia is home to more than 17,000 treasures and numerous free exhibitions of Indigenous and modern art—often lent by wealthy local collectors—which make it worth an afternoon's devotion. The collection of Indigenous art is impressive, while other works include Australian and international paintings, sculpture, prints, crafts, and decorative arts. Free guided tours run regularly, though times vary, check the website for details. Generally, they're held at 1 pm Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. Family-friendly tours are held on Sundays and during school holidays. There are also special tours for the vision impaired—phone or email ahead for bookings. Admission is free although donations are appreciated. An entry charge may apply to special exhibitions, many of which come direct from the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City, thanks to a special collaboration between the two galleries which runs until March 2015. There are also many seasonal, ticketed events, from intimate rock and pop concerts to late night Friday viewings with a bar and comedians.
