Safety and Precautions

Swimming in the ocean is not recommended because of the box jellyfish, commonly known as "stingers." Salt and freshwater crocodiles are found in most Top End billabongs and rivers, and are occasionally seen even on Darwin beaches. The accessible rivers and billabongs are generally signposted if saltwater crocodiles are known to inhabit the area, but if you are not sure, don't swim.

Avoid driving outside towns after dark due to the dangers presented by buffalo, cattle, horses, donkeys, and kangaroos on the road. If your vehicle breaks down, stay with it; it is easier to find a missing vehicle than missing people. If you are going for a bushwalk, always tells someone your plan and when you expect to return.
