Darwin and the Kimberley Places

Purnululu (Bungle Bungle) National Park

The most popular walking trails are in the south of the park, where the famous "beehives" are located. From Piccaninny Creek carpark you can hike in to Cathedral Gorge; the walk takes about an hour. Take a 20-minute detour on the Domes Walk to see more of the famous sandstone "beehives." If you have more time, you can follow the Piccaninny Creek walk into the Piccaninny Gorge, following an eroded riverbed and sandstone ledges. This will take all day, but you can return at any time. In the north of the park there are walks to Echidna Gorge (about one hour), where livistonia palms cling to the cliffs and the gorge narrows to about three feet across, and Mini Palms Gorge, a rock-strewn gorge again filled with livistonia palms. At the end there is a viewing platform overlooking the valley. Allow an hour for this walk.
