Tasmania Travel Guide

Getting Around the Northwest

This region is not the easiest to get to (the nearest airport is as much as two hours away at Launceston) but the destination is certainly rewarding enough to make the journey worthwhile. Driving to Cradle Mountain from Launceston takes 2 hours, and 1½ hours from Devonport. It is possible to take public transport through coach operator Tassie Link, which connects the major transportation hubs with Cradle Mountain and Strahan, but for convenience, nothing beats renting your own car. It should be noted that the northern part of the Cradle Mountain–Lake St. Clair National Park (that is, Cradle Mountain itself) is accessed by roads inland from Devonport and the nearby town of Sheffield. The southerly Lake St. Clair end of the park, though, is reached by the Lyell Highway between Hobart and Queenstown at Derwent Bridge.
