Begun in 1822, the colonial Georgian-style St. James is Sydney's oldest surviving church, and another fine Francis Greenway design. Now lost among the skyscrapers, the church's tall spire once served as a landmark for ships entering the harbor. Enter through the door in the Doric portico. Plaques commemorating Australian explorers and administrators cover the interior walls. Free guided tours are given weekdays at 2:30 PM. Lunchtime concerts are presented every Wednesday from late February to late December.
