Built by soldiers and convicts from 1841 on to replace the colony's original Wynyard Barracks—and still occupied by the army—this vast building is an excellent example of Regency-style architecture. Behind the 740-foot-long sandstone facade is mostly a parade ground, where an army band performs most Thursdays at 10 AM. In the former military prison on the parade grounds is the Army Museum, with exhibits covering Australia's military history from the early days of the Rum Corps to the Malayan conflict of the 1950s. Free tours of the barracks take place Thursday at 10 AM sharp (it's the army!), and include a tour of the museum (mid-February to late November). The museum is open on Sunday for those who don't want to take a tour, but you'll have to pay A$2. Oxford St. at Oatley Rd., Paddington. 02/9339-3303. Tours free, museum only A$2. Museum Thurs. 10-12:30, Sun. 10-3.
