Surfers Paradise

Before the Gold Coast existed as a tourism entity, there was Surfers Paradise: a stunning 3-km (2-mile) stretch of beach with great surf, 5 km (3 miles) south of Southport. Now overrun with high-rises, it's still a vibrant beachside town, with plentiful shopping options and an emergent arts and fine-dining culture (check out the 4217 for some of the region's up and coming artisans and providores (www.the4217.com). Regardless, nightlife is still the main draw: head to Orchid, Elkhorn, and Cavill avenues. Or, for stunning 360-degree views of the entire coast and hinterland, venture up to the SkyPoint observation deck and Seventy7 Café + Bar located on the 77th floor of Surfers’ famous Q1 Tower, the tallest building in the southern hemisphere.

Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets. Thrice weekly, crowds flock to haggle for handmade crafts and gifts at the busy Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets. The Esplanade, between Hanlan St. and Elkhorn Ave., Surfers Paradise, Queensland, 4217. Wed., Fri., and Sun. 3–8 pm.
