Townsville

Townsville and its adjacent twin city of Thuringowa make up Australia's largest tropical city, with a combined population of around 160,000. It's the commercial capital of the north, and a major center for education, scientific research, and defense. Spread along the banks of Ross Creek and around the pink granite outcrop of Castle Hill, Townsville is a pleasant city of palm-fringed malls, historic colonial buildings, and lots of parkland and gardens. It's also the stepping-off point for Magnetic Island, one of the state's largest islands and a haven for wildlife.
