Daintree Discovery Centre. This World Heritage–accredited Wet Tropics Visitor Centre's elevated boardwalks and a high viewing tower enable you to overlook an astoundingly diverse tract of ancient rain forest. You can acquire information en route from handheld audio-guides, expert talks, and the on-site interpretative center. Four audio-guided trails include a Bush Tucker Trail and a Cassowary Circuit, although it's unlikely that you'll spot these large but well-camouflaged birds. Take the Aerial Walkway across part of the bush, then the stairs to the top of the 76-foot-high Canopy Tower. Keen students of botany and ecology might want to prebook a guided group tour. The shop sells books, cards, souvenirs, and clothing. Tulip Oak Rd. off Cape Tribulation Rd., Cow Bay, Cape Tribulation, QLD, 4873. 07/4098–9171. A$32 (includes 48-page guidebook/return entry for 7 days). Daily 8:30–5.

Jungle Surfing Canopy Tours. It's an exhilarating perspective on the rain forest and reef: suspended above the canopy on flying-fox zip lines, your speed controlled by guides, you whiz along (and if you like, flip upside-down) over lush rain forest and Mason's Creek, stopping at five tree platforms for killer bird's-eye views. Sessions last 1½ to 2 hours (A$90) and depart eight times a day starting at 7:45 am. Nightly guided Jungle Adventures Nightwalks (A$40) explore the critter-filled 45-acre grounds, departing PK's Jungle Village reception at 7:30 pm. Transfers from most local accommodations are free, or self-drive to the central departure point. Thrice-weekly day-tour packages from Port Douglas include lunch at Whet. Note that Jungle Surfing is unsuitable for anyone weighing more than 120 kilograms (260 pounds), and that children under 18 must bring a medical certificate and waiver before they'll be allowed to zip-line. From The Boardwalk Cafe (next to PK's), off Cape Tribulation Rd., Cape Tribulation, QLD, 4873. 07/4098–0043.
