The Great Barrier Reef parallels most of the state's edge, all the way south to Hervey Bay. A coastal road makes for easy travel between the major cities and little towns that are jumping-off points to Fraser Island, the Whitsundays, and Magnetic Island, but vast distances make flying the best option between mainland cities and the offshore resorts.
