The Great Barrier Reef parallels most of the state's edge, all the way south to Hervey Bay. A coastal road makes for easy travel between the major cities and little towns that are jumping-off points to Fraser Island, the Whitsundays, and Magnetic Island, but vast distances make flying the best option between mainland cities and the offshore resorts. If you have more time, taking the train is a relaxing option.
The southern end of the state bordering New South Wales is known as the Gold Coast, where sprawling beach towns mimic Miami Beach and Waikiki. North of Brisbane is the quieter Sunshine Coast, where you can kick back on nearly deserted beaches or take four-wheel-drive expeditions into beautiful rain forests. North of Cairns, the Cape York Peninsula is all tropical terrain, where you can hike and camp in the jungle. In the western hinterlands, mountains stretch into the central deserts that border the country's Northern Territory and South Australia.
