Wooroonooran National Park

Fodor's Review:

Wooroonooran National Park, which extends from just south of Gordonvale and stretches to the Palmerston Highway between Innisfail and Milla Milla, is one of the most densely vegetated areas in Australia. Rain forest dominates Wooroonooran—from lowland tropical rain forest to the stunted growth on Mt. Bartle Frere—at 5,287 feet, the highest point in Queensland and Australia's largest remaining area of upland rain forest. Tracks include the Tchupala Falls circuit (30 mins), Tchupala Falls to Goolagan's picnic area (1-2 hrs); Goolagan's to Henrietta Creek (30 mins); the Nadroya Falls Circuit (3-4 hrs); and the steep, challenging Mt. Bartle Frere trail, accessed from Josephine Falls (2 days). Bush camping is allowed, with ranger permission, throughout the park, except at Josephine Falls. At Henrietta Creek rain-forest campground, sites, toilets, and picnic facilities are provided, but you'll need drinking water and a cooking stove. The creek is home to platypus and freshwater turtles; possums can be spotted after dark. Daily permits cost A$4.50 per person. To reach the park, look for signs about 50 km (31 mi) south of Cairns on the Bruce Highway—the trip takes about 2½ hours.
