Tully Gorge

Fodor's Review:

Located in the wettest zone of the Wet Tropics World Heritage area, the mighty Tully River is a magnet for white-water rafters. Access the gorge via Tully township, about 100 km (62 mi) south of Cairns, then drive 40 minutes to Kareeya Hydroelectric Station, where there's a parking lot and viewing platform. Other excellent vantage points are the Flip Wilson and Frank Roberts lookouts. In butterfly season (September-February), the short (20-minute) Rainforest Butterfly walk is filled with fluttering creatures. Parts of the forest can be waterlogged in the wet season, especially January through April; rocks can be slippery; and Tully River water levels can change rapidly.
