A sprawling Spanish-style castle and accompanying gardens grace this eco-certified National Trust site, set in the lush Mena Creek Falls rain forest. It's an unusual place in that it lets you explore both horticulture and Aboriginal culture. After a self-guided botanical walk or bush-tucker tour with members of the area's indigenous Baddagun people, enjoy traditional Devonshire tea on the café's deck or buy local art and craft at the gift shop. Cool off under a 48-foot waterfall on the property (BYO swimming gear). On the torch-lighted evening tours, you might spot eels, water dragons, fireflies, glowworms, and the odd snake. Allow three hours to fully explore the grounds and buildings. It's about 1½ hours south of Cairns, via the Bruce Highway.
