The largest regional gallery in Queensland, the Cairns Regional Gallery, is housed in the former Public Office building at City Place. Built in the early 1930s, the magnificent, two-story edifice has high ceilings and maple-paneled rooms with native wood floors. A diverse collection of artwork by local, national, international, and indigenous artists is on display, with a particular emphasis on photography from around Australia. One-hour guided tours are on Wednesday and Friday: be sure to book ahead. Workshops are often held in conjunction with exhibits.
