The Esplanade, which fronts Cairns Harbour between Minnie and Spence streets, is the focal point of life in Cairns. A lagoon-style swimming pool—common throughout Queensland, where the temperatures are hot and the beaches often inhospitable—is open well after sunset, and is always buzzing with activity. As well as being a free and convenient place to cool off from the sticky air, it's well situated for viewing the boats around Marlin Jetty. Some of the town's best shops, hotels, and restaurants are found on the Esplanade, many of the backpackers who throng to Cairns gather here, giving it a lively feel.
