This attractive, colonial-style hotel in the heart of town is the best bet in Cooktown. With verandas across the front, terra-cotta tiles, and soft colors, the two-story timber-and-brick affair has the air of a plantation house. Air-conditioned guest rooms and apartments, outfitted with rustic wooden doors, tiled floors, and balconies, overlook tropical gardens or the Endeavour River. The Balcony restaurant is the most upscale dining spot around these parts, serving classic Aussie dishes with Asian flavors—try the salt-and-pepper prawn and crocodile. The Turkish doughnuts with lime syrup and honey ice cream make an excellent dessert. It's open Monday-Saturday for breakfast but also serves lunch and dinner in the dry season, April to November. The Café bar has Internet access, and serves light lunches, coffee, and local beers.
