Most trips to Western Australia begin in Perth. Apart from its own points of interest, there are a few great day trips to take from the city: to Rottnest Island, for example, or north to the coastal Nambung National Park. The port city of Fremantle is a good place to unwind, and, if you have the time, a tour of the South West—with its seashore, parks, hardwood forests, wildflowers, and first-rate wineries and restaurants—is highly recommended. The old goldfield towns east of Perth are a slice of the dust-blown Australia of yore.
