The Stirling Ranges, together with the adjacent Porongurup National Park, 71 km (44 mi) north of Albany, are considered the only true mountain range in the South West. The highlight is a climb up the 3,541-foot Bluff Knoll for spectacular views of the largely flat surrounding countryside. Don't be fooled by the apparent short distance from the parking lot—the 3-km (2-mi) trek takes around three hours round-trip, and you need to bring plenty of water and wet-weather gear, as sudden storms can spring up, even in summer. The prettiest time to visit is during the wildflower season (September and October). Albany is close enough to serve as a base. If you want to stay overnight, The Lily (08/9827-9205. www.thelily.com.au) offers double rooms adjacent to their restaurant, and an authentic Dutch windmill is on the premises. Freshly ground wholemeal flours are available for purchase.
