Between Monkey Mia, 354 km (220 mi) south, and Ningaloo Reef Marine Park, 370 km (230 mi) north, the town of Carnarvon is a popular stopover. Stroll the Fascine, a palm-lined harborside boardwalk, where the Gascoyne River flows into the Indian Ocean. One Mile Jetty, built in 1899, is the longest jetty in the north of Western Australia, and you can walk to the end or take the Coffee Pot Ocean Tramway. It's a top local fishing spot, with mulloway, tailor, mackerel, trevally, and bream below year-round. From March to July you can watch locals catch blue manna crabs in drop nets. Drive 70 km (44 mi) north of Carnarvon to view the Blow Holes, where ocean swells force trapped air and streams of water up to 66 feet in the air.
