Fodor's Review:

The Western Australian Maritime Museum, which resembles an upside-down boat, sits at the edge of Fremantle Harbour. It houses Australia 11, winner of the 1983 America's Cup, and the hands-on exhibits are great fun for children. You can also take one-hour guided tours of the adjacent submarine Ovens, a former Royal Australian Navy World War II submarine. The Shipwreck Gallery houses the recovered remains of the Dutch wrecks, including the Batavia (wrecked offshore in 1629), and the 1872 SS Xantho steamer.

  • Cost: Museum A$10 day pass, museum and Ovens A$15, gallery free
  • Open: Museum and gallery daily 9:30-5, Ovens Fri.-Sun. and school holidays 10-4:30
