Monkey Mia is a World Heritage Site and the setting for one of the world's most extraordinary natural wonders; nowhere else do wild dolphins interact so freely with human beings. In 1964 a woman from one of the makeshift fishing camps in the area hand-fed one of the dolphins that regularly followed the fishing boats home. Other dolphins followed that lead, and an extensive family of wild dolphins now comes of its own accord to be fed.
For many, standing in the shallow waters of Shark Bay to hand-feed a dolphin is the experience of a lifetime. There are no set feeding times. Dolphins show up at any hour of the day at the public beach, where park rangers feed them. Rangers share their food with people who want to get close to the sea creatures. The Monkey Mia Visitor Centre has videos and information.
