Built in 1851, the Albany Convict Gaol on Stirling Terrace served as the district jail from 1872 until it was closed in the 1930s. Restored by the Albany Historical Society in 1968, it now contains a collection of social and historical artifacts. Night tours are also available on Friday and Saturday evenings (A$15). Nearby Patrick Taylor Cottage, a wattle-and-daub (twig-and-mud) dwelling built on Duke Street in 1832 is believed to be the oldest in the district. It contains more than 2,000 objects, including period costumes, old clocks, silverware, and kitchenware.
