Whalers brought huge numbers of sperm whales into Albany's harbor every season—the greatest number being 1,174, in 1975—until the practice was stopped in 1978. Today southern right whales and humpbacks are found in King George Sound during their migration between July and October. The old whaling station has been converted to the Whaleworld museum, which has memorable displays of cetaceans (whales and dolphins) and pinnipeds (seals and sea lions), as well as the restored whaling brig Cheyne IV. The museum lies 20 km (12 mi) from Albany along the shore of Frenchman's Bay.
