Dolphin Discovery Centre

Fodor's Review:

Around 100 bottlenose dolphins make their home in Koombana Bay, and a half dozen of them regularly visit the sandy beach in front of the excellent Dolphin Discovery Centre. Visitors here are permitted to wade into the water while the dolphins swim around them. There are some restrictions on actually swimming with the dolphins, but the helpful center volunteers explain all the rules, which are aimed at ensuring the dolphins aren't harmed by the human interaction. The center also conducts "Swim on the Wild Side" tours which allow you to swim with wild dolphins in their natural environment. The tour is led by the center's own marine biologists and the cost of A$125 per person includes entry to the interpretive center, instruction, equipment (mask, snorkel, fins, and wet suit), and light refreshments. Tours depart daily (weather permitting) at 9 AM and midday in November; at 8 AM and 11 AM from December to March; and at midday in April.

  • Cost: A$6
  • Open: June-Aug., daily 9-3; Sept.-May, daily 8-4
