A landmark of early Fremantle atop the limestone cliff known as Arthur's Head, the Round House was built in 1831 by convicts to house other convicts. This curious, 12-sided building is the state's oldest surviving structure. From its ramparts there are great vistas of High Street out to the Indian Ocean. Underneath, a tunnel was carved through the cliffs in the mid-1800s to give ships lying at anchor offshore easy access from town. Volunteer guides are on duty during opening hours.
