Set on the Swan coastal plain 245 km (152 mi) north of Perth, Nambung National Park surrounds its most famous attraction: the Pinnacles Desert. Over the years, wind and drifting sand have sculpted eerie limestone forms that loom as high as 15 feet. These "pinnacles" are actually the fossilized roots of ancient coastal plants fused with sand, and you can walk among them along a 1,650-foot-long trail that starts at the parking area. There's also a 3-km (2-mi), one-way Pinnacles Desert Loop scenic drive (not suitable for large RVs or buses). August through October the heath blazes with wildflowers. Entrance fees are A$9 per car or A$3.40 per bus passenger. Call 08/9652-7043 for more information.
