Fremantle Prison

Fodor's Review:

The former Fremantle Prison, built in 1855, is where 44 inmates met their fate on the prison gallows between 1888 and 1964. Tours include the classic-art cell, where a superb collection of drawings by convict James Walsh decorates his quarters. Reservations are essential for the 90-minute Torchlight Tours (evening tours by flashlight). For the 2½-hour Tunnel Tour, visitors are provided with hard hats, overalls, boots, and headlamps before descending 65 feet into the labyrinthine tunnels which run beneath the prison. Reservations essential.

  • Cost: A$16, including a 75-min tour every 30 mins. Torchlight Tour A$20, Tunnel Tour A$55
  • Open: Daily 10-5; last tour at 5 PM. Torchlight Tours Wed. and Fri., every 20 mins from 7 PM on demand; last tour usually 9 PM. Tunnel Tour every hr 9 AM-3:20 PM
