Fodor's Expert Review Melba House

98 Waratah St., Katoomba, New South Wales, 2780, Australia

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

If Dame Nellie, Dame Joan, and Dame Edna are new to you, you'll certainly be well acquainted with the ladies after a stay in beautiful Melba House, as the three guestrooms bear their names. In fact, the B&Bis named for Dame Nellie Melba, an Australian opera star in the late 19th century. The Dame Nellie room is the largest and decorated in lovely black-and-white Laura Ashley prints and furnished with a sofa, small dining table, and a chandelier. Bright colors and sparkle are the hallmarks of the Dame Edna suite (named after Australia's favorite cross-dresser, Edna Everage) where the pink and white Laura Ashley prints are the perfect match for the pink marble fireplace. The Dame Joan room (named after opera singer Joan Sutherland) may be the smallest room and the only one without a Jacuzzi, but is equally as charming and has all the same welcoming touches including fresh fruit bowl, chocolates, and port by the bedside. The house has all the charms of the 19th century—fireplaces, high decorative plastered ceilings, and a wide timber veranda where you can have breakfast in the warmer months. Owner Sue Handley, a dedicated foodie, provides a sumptuous breakfast and delicious afternoon tea. She picks up guests from the railway station and provides an array of discounts for local attractions, such as the Trolley Bus and a day spa.
