Lord Howe Island Travel Guide
Mt. Gower. The larger of the two volcanic peaks located at the southern end of Lord Howe Island, Mt. Gower rises 875 meters (2870 feet) above sea level. The hike to the summit is arduous and should be undertaken with a guide. Covering a distance of about 14 km (9 miles) round-trip and taking about 8.5 hours to complete, it's a wonderful experience and affords sensational views across the island, the reef, and out to Ball's Pyramid, 23 km (14 miles) away. Along the way, guides point out rare plants and birdlife. Fifth-generation islander Jack Shick, of Lord Howe Island Tours, is a highly experienced guide and takes tours twice a week (Monday and Thursday); the cost is about A$60 per person.
