Connex, a private company, runs trains throughout metropolitan Melbourne from 4:30 AM until around 1 AM. The zone structure is similar to that of the city's buses and trams. Prepurchase a Metcard at the station or from a 7-11 store. One-zone, two-hour tickets are A$3.20; all-day tickets are A$6.10. The main terminal for metropolitan trains is Flinders Street Station, at the corner of Flinders and Swanston streets.
Southern Cross Railway Station is at Spencer and Little Collins streets. From here the countrywide V-Line has 11-hour trips to Sydney, as well as service to many regional centers in Victoria. Public transportation is available, but if you have cumbersome luggage, you'd do better to head for the taxi stand outside the station.
