Bicycling in Melbourne

Melbourne and its environs contain more than 100 km (62 mi) of bike paths, including scenic routes along the Yarra River and Port Phillip Bay. Bikes can be rented for about A$25 per day from trailers alongside the bike paths.

Bicycle Victoria (Level 10, 446 Collins St., City Center. 03/8636-8888. www.bv.com.au) can provide information about area bike paths. Its excellent Web site has trail maps and descriptions as well as directions.

Melbourne City-Bike Company (0433/174077. chris@citybike.com.au) has a fleet of pedal-electric bicycles (emission-free) made out of recycled materials. It's a healthy way—for you and the environment—to see some of the city's best sights. One-hour tours cost A$50 and operate daily between 10 AM and 4 PM.
