You can't pick and choose hotels on the Great Barrier Reef islands—most of the islands have just one main resort, usually offering a range of lodging types and prices. Choose your destination based on your budget, and on the kind of vacation you want—active, relaxed, or a mix of both. Resorts on Bedarra, Lizard, and Hayman islands offer white-glove service to a discerning international clientele, who take their leisure, and their privacy, very seriously. Eco-focused island resorts such as Heron, Wilson, Lady Elliott, South Long Island Nature Lodge, and Hinchinbrook are great for getting back to nature (without really roughing it). A vacation at South Molle, Lindeman, Daydream, or Great Keppel Island is almost like a trip to sleepaway camp: activities are scheduled from early morning until late at night and include dozens of water sports, nature walks, and beachy activities; outdoor movies; live entertainment; and theme nights.
