National Film and Sound Archive

Fodor's Review:

Australia's movie industry was booming during the early 20th century, but it ultimately couldn't compete with the sophistication and volume of imported films. Concern that film stock and sound recordings of national importance would be lost prompted the construction of this edifice to preserve Australia's movie and musical heritage. The archive contains an impressive display of Australian moviemaking skills, including a short film that was shot on Melbourne Cup Day in 1896 – the oldest film in the collection. Special exhibitions focus on aspects of the industry ranging from rock music to historic newsreels.
