Despite its modest size, Canberra has a fabulous dining scene. Many of the best restaurants are in suburban shopping areas, and serve everything from Mod-Oz cuisine to European, Middle Eastern, and all varieties of Asian dishes. A glass or two of excellent local wine will make any area dining experience even better.
As the country's capital city, Canberra has an impressive selection of public spaces that give glimpses into Australia's history and national character. The vast, modern Parliament House is the most famous of these, but the National Museum of Australia, National Gallery of Australia, the Australian Institute of Sport, and the Australian War Memorial are equally fascinating.
Canberra's surrounding mountain ranges and river valleys allow for lots of invigorating outdoor pursuits—especially in autumn and spring, when the weather is crisp. Lake Burley Griffin and its environs provide a scenic backdrop for walking and cycling.
