Hyatt Hotel Canberra Review

Occupying a National Heritage building dating from 1924, this elegant hotel has been restored to its original Art Deco splendor. The haunt of politicians, business people, and holidaymakers alike, this Hyatt has ultra large guest rooms measuring over 40 sq m (430.5 sq ft). Enormous marble bathrooms will appeal to anyone who enjoys a good soak in the tub. The hotel has extensive gardens and is within easy walking distance of the Parliamentary Triangle. Afternoon tea here, served daily between 2:30 and 5 in the gracious Tea Lounge, is one of Canberra's most popular traditions.

We stayed in August of 2011 at the Hyatt Canberra. It's one of the top rated hotels for Canberra but we found it was merely an "okay" experience. The location is central to the capitol, however there are no restaurants located close so you're options are to dine-in the hotel or drive across Lake Burley Griffin into Canberra central. The hotel room was large with a private balcony. I noted the tub to be unclean and not cleaned any of the days of our 6 night stay. Upon check-in they asked what newspaper we preferred but only delivered our paper once - the morning after we complained, but never again after that. WiFi is spotty inside the room: we found the best reception only on one side of the room. Parking is a problem as the car park is located a distance from the front entrance. There is parking at the back of the hotel, however half of the parking space allocated is used for their gym/clubhouse which seems to be used predominantly by people who do not stay at the hotel, therefore jockeying for a space on that side of the lot is impossible from 3pm to 8pm. The hotel restaurant is only "okay" and prices are high ($39pp for breakfast buffet). I ordered a martini at the hotel bar, it was awful as it contained my requested extra olives with a generous amount of SWEET vermouth, yuk. Service was spotty and seemed to be thrown toward the events hosted by the hotel instead of general guest service. Overall, the benefit for cost at the Hyatt is low. At over $300 per night, and with other Hyatt experience, my expectations were not unrealistic as Hyatt has maintained exceptional levels of service at other properties around the world. This Hyatt, is a disappointment.

Having stayed in all of Canberra's 4 to 5 star hotels this one is by far the best.
The Park Hyatt Canberra is a traditional hotel with all the trimmings so if you like cutting edge or trendy it may not be to your liking, however as someone who stays in a number of trendy hotels elsewhere, this place always calls me back to visit!
