Historic Districts / Sites, Alice Springs
Fodor's Review:
The first white settlement in the area was at this reserve 3 km (2 mi) north of Alice Springs, beside the original freshwater spring named after the wife of Charles Todd. As the South Australian Superintendent of Telegraphs, Todd planned and supervised construction of 12 repeater stations -- including this one -- along the telegraph line to Darwin, completed in 1872. The restored telegraph-station buildings evoke the Red Centre as it was at the turn of the 20th century. Within the buildings, exhibits of station life and a display of early photographs chronicle its history. A scenic walking and cycling path runs along the Todd River between Alice Springs and the reserve; the picnic grounds are open daily from 8 AM to 9 PM.
