By Car

A car gives you the freedom to discover the country lanes and villages in the hills region outside the city, and Adelaide also has excellent road connections with other states. Highway 1 links the city with Melbourne, 728 km (451 mi) southeast, and with Perth, 2,724 km (1,689 mi) to the west, via the vast and bleak Nullarbor Plain. The Stuart Highway provides access to the Red Centre. Alice Springs is 1,542 km (956 mi) north of Adelaide. The Royal Automobile Association (RAA) offers emergency and roadside assistance to members, and allows you to join on the spot if you're in a jam.

Most of the major car-rental agencies have offices both at the airport and in downtown Adelaide.
