With a fabulous view overlooking the sea where the Waimea Estuary meets Tasman Bay, Flax is one of the nicest spots in the area to enjoy a meal. The building itself retains the airy space and soaring beamed ceilings of the boathouse it once was; there's a lovely outdoor seating area with shade sails to protect you from the sun. Owners Tim Greenhough and Karen Hannan share a fine pedigree as restauranteurs. Their summer mains include salmon with hokkien noodles, comfit of duck thigh, and a beef fillet. There is, naturally, a wonderful selection of local wines, and some spectacular desserts. Try the lemon posset -- a velvety custard served with fresh berries and pistachio biscotti. Reservations essential in summer.
