Tancred Street

Fodor's Review:

In several places along and just off Tancred Street, you can check out the work of local artisans, particularly the pounamu carvings the area's known for. For instance, Westland Greenstone (34 Tancred St. 03/755-8713) has an interesting walk-through workshop where you can watch greenstone being cut, shaped, and polished. At the Hokitika Craft Gallery Co-operative (25 Tancred St. 03/755-8802) greenstone carvings are joined by pottery, woodwork, and textiles. Ocean Paua (25 Weld St. 03/755-6128) has a varied range of paua shell, greenstone, and bone artworks and jewelry.
