Bay House Café

Fodor's Review:

Tucked amongst flax and manuka bushes beside the wild, foaming surf beach at Tauranga Bay this busy little café serves as fine a menu as you'll get anywhere in the South Island. Owner/chef Luke McCann prepares top-quality local beef, lamb and seafood dishes, like the Whitebait Burger (whitebait are a local fish delicacy) layered with mozzarella, aioli and tomatoes. Or try the pan-fried scallops with black rice, or the West Coast beef fillet served with garlic-roasted mushrooms, chorizo and chive mash. You'll find an extensive, mainly South Island wine list, and their own Bay House-brewed beers. It's well worth the bit of extra driving to get here.
