$$-$$$$, Tongariro National Park
Fodor's Review:
Built in 1929 in a French chateau style, this property really catches the eye as you drive into Whakapapa Village. Most rooms have fine mountain views; be sure to ask for one when booking. Meals are taken in the Ruapehu Restaurant ($$$) -- serving traditional New Zealand cuisine with a modern slant -- or there's a less formal café. The hotel can arrange guided hikes on all the best-known routes in the park.
