Agrodome

Farms, Rotorua

Fodor's Review:

At the Agrodome, a working sheep-and-cattle farm, you can take a guided tour through the farm and the kiwifruit orchard, but the main attraction is the farm show -- it's been going on since 1971 and still pulls in people by the sheep-truckload. Well-trained dogs run across the backs of sheep, and there's a shearing demonstration and a lot of barking, noise, and farmyard smells. You might get to feed newborn lambs who tuck into bottles with much gusto and tail wagging, or you could even find your watch auctioned in exchange for a woolly sweater. Heads-up to the uninitiated: what the shearer is wearing is not an undershirt but a shearing vest, a classic Kiwi item worn at some point by every red-blooded male and, yes, a few women, too! Expect plenty of wisecracks about pulling the wool over your eyes and about Whoopi Goldberg (here, a Lincolnshire sheep with dreadlock-style wool). Sure, it's a bit corny, but it's still educational and fun. Shows are at 9:30, 11, and 2:30 daily.
