Station Cafe

$$-$$$, New Zealand, Tongariro National Park

Fodor's Review:

Modern prints light the dusky pink and wood-panel walls of this bright and breezy café/bar with the tracks of the north-south railway running right outside the door. There's coffee in all shades, and at lunch, the food runs from nachos to potato wedges to ploughman's sarnies (aka thick sandwiches with meat, cheese, and onion). In the evening, you might find more contemporary fare, such as tender venison with juniper-and-tamarillo glaze. Finish up with a pastry shell brimming with rhubarb and custard, topped with berries and crème fraîche, and you're definitely king of the rails. Be prepared for crowds when the train pulls in twice a day.
